Top hacks to save on family cinema trips

Going to the cinema has become an expensive affair, particularly if you’ve got a family. So mySupermarket has compiled some of the best tips, tricks, and hacks to help ease the strain on your wallet.

Go on a weekday

Catching a mid-week movie is a great way to save the pennies, especially if you visit at off-peak times (weekdays before 5pm), which will slash pounds off your ticket price. Predictably, evenings and weekends cost the most.

Some Cineworld cinemas have “Bargain Tuesdays” which offers visitors cheaper tickets all day. Vue has a similar offer dubbed “Super Tuesdays”, which offers up to a third off all day. Odeon also offers supersaver tickets Monday to Thursday before 5pm.

Try a voucher website

Websites such as and vouchercloud often have offers which could end up saving you a fortune on the cost of both your tickets and snacks. Vouchercloud is currently offering tickets at £4.00 per person at Reel cinema. Even better, the site says that the offer is valid until 2 February 2017! To redeem you just need to make an account on the website, redeem the voucher and show it to the cashier when you arrive.

Get the timing right

Most major cinemas offer discounts for children at specific times.

  • Cineworld has £2 tickets (£3.50 for 3D films) for both adults and kids on selected Saturday and Sunday morning screenings through its Movies for Juniors programme.
  • Odeon screens discounted kids movies at certain cinemas on Saturday and Sunday mornings and through the school summer holidays with tickets at £2.50. Adult tickets for 13 to 17-year-olds at Odeon cinemas also have money knocked off.
  • Vue has £1.99 tickets (£3.29 for 3D) for both kids and accompanying adults on selected weekend mornings and throughout school holidays. Head to the Mini Mornings offers page for further details.

Eat before the movie

There’s something about the smell of popcorn that gets the taste buds going. If you want to save money, don’t be tempted by this expensive food which in some cases has a 1,000 percent markup. So it stands to reason that you’d save a lot of money by eating before entering the cinema or by using mySupermarket to see the best deals from 13 different retailers! You can even access us when you’re out and about on the mySupermarket app.
